Mrs. Samantha Coate Dies at North Salem
Mrs. Samantha Pritchett Coate, age 85, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Mae Trotter, at North Salem early Tuesday morning. She had been sick about six months from a heart disorder. After the death of her husband, Ezra Coate, in Danville last August, she had lived with Mrs. Trotter.
She was born near Lizton, and had been a deaf mute since she was two years old. She graduated from the Mute school in Indianapolis, organized the first Mute literary society and was its first president. She was always active in all functions of all mute organizations. Mr. Coate also was a mute. [Note: They met at the Mute school in Indianapolis.] She was also a member of the Lizton Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the Cox Funeral Home, North Salem. The Rev. D. E. Noland, assisted by the Rev. Raleigh Smith, will be in charge of the service. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, North Salem. Survivors are several nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary B. Pritchett of Lizton. She was the last of a family of eight children.
