Race Car Driver. Hired by L. S. Chadwick in 1909 to drive his Chadwick Big 6 race car upon the departure of Willie Haupt. Drove in numerous hill climbs and road races for Chadwick. On July 5, he came in first and broke the record at Wildwood, NJ for the mile race set the prior year. On August 5th, he won his race at the Algonquin Hill Climb, outside of Chicago, with a time of 22 seconds for the first hill and 28 seconds for the second. Weeks later, at the Indianapolis speedway, he won the 10 mile free-for-all race. 1910 was the second and last year that Zengel drove for Chadwick. His race up Giant's Despair Hill climb at Wilkes-Barre, PA, on June 14, was competitive but he came in second to Ralph De Palma, driving a Fiat, in the free-for-all. Competing in the Invitational contest, he came in first place. On June 18, he won first place at the hill climb in Baltimore. Zengel won his last race for Chadwick in October at the Fairmont Park auto race in Philadelphia. In August of 1911, Zengel, driving a National, came in first at the Elgin Road Race. In 1912, driving a Stutz for Ideal Motor Co, he came in 6th at the Indianapolis 500. (bio by: Mike O)
