My great-grandmother, Ida, was one of seven children born to Fredrick Loughridge and Sarah Stair. She was raised in northern Indiana, and worked as a teacher for a short time. She married James Andrew Smith on November 28, 1900. They settled on a farm in Newton County, Indiana, and began their family. After several years, they moved to Tonkawa, Oklahoma, in the hopes that the dry air and weather in that area would help the health of one of their sons. The family moved back to Indiana after several years, and then back to Tonkawa for good.
Ida was survived by her sons William, Emory and Orlin; daughters Margaret and Florence LaVera; and several grandchildren. Her husband, daughters Alice and Velma, an infant son, and grandson Billy preceded her in death.
