Obituary

Richard Arthur Champion

Richard Arthur Champion, age 76, succumbed to a heart attack on June 5th, 2013 at the Adventist Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.

Richard was born on May 28th, 1937 in Portland, OR to parents Wilfred LeThorpe and Ella Mae (Hagen) Champion. He graduated with the class of 1955 from Jefferson High School in Portland. After high school, Mr. Champion joined the Oregon Air National Guard where he served for 40 years, before retiring in 1995. Richard lived in Battle Ground, Washington for most of his adult life, before returning to his hometown of Portland for his final years.

In the Air National Guard, Richard Champion attained the rank of Master Sergeant while serving as an Air Policeman and Flight Management Air Technician in the 142nd Fighter Wing air defense unit.

Richard had a deep love for music, art, literature, history, politics, and cinema. He was a subscriber for 41 years for the Oregon Symphony and a radio programs. Uncle Rick, as he was known to his nieces and nephews, enjoyed in sharing his passion for culture with his nieces and nephews, as well as his friend Linda Six's daughters Meryl & Hannah, by often taking them to symphonies, ballets, movies, and often out for pizza afterwards.

Richard Champion is preceded in death by both of his parents and youngest brother, Jay Champion. Survivors include his brother Guy (Judith) Champion of Portland, OR; nephews David Champion of Portland, OR, Paul Champion of Kirkland, WA, Martin Champion of Eugene, OR, Robert Champion of Kelso, WA, Richard Champion of Federal Way, WA, Corbin (Heather) Champion of Tigard, OR, and John Champion of Portland, OR; nieces Crystal Champion (Larry Jefferson) of Olympia, WA, Tanya Newcomb of Portland, OR, Michelle (Roy) Dorland of Rochester, WA, and Elizabeth Champion of Portland, OR. Richard is also survived by his friend George Tester who joined the Air National Guard with him in 1955 and had been friends with him ever since. Also, he is survived by his dearest friend Linda Six who devotedly cared for him during his difficult final years.

Richard's funeral will be held on Wednesday June 19th at 11 AM at his burial site at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland. e service will be officiated by Minister Forest Miller, Richard's friend.
