At the time of his passing in 1893, Marion C. Kiser left the largest estate in Atlanta. He made his fortune as a wholesale shoe and dry goods dealer and real estate investor.
Marion Columbus Kiser was the eighth child of John Kiser and Eleanor Howell who were born in Mecklenburg County, NC, married in 1814 and then moved to Habersham County, GA. During the 1820s they moved to Campbell County, GA, where they farmed. Their eldest son, Wiley Jackson Kiser became a dry goods merchant and Marion Columbus and his younger brother, John Franklin, apprenticed with Wiley before the Civil War. After the war they moved to Atlanta and formed their own business, M C and J F Kiser Company, which by the 1870s had become a wholesale establishment specializing in shoes.
After John's death in 1882, Marion continued the business until his death, when it was passed on to his son, William Howell Kiser.
