| Birth: | Aug. 3, 1830 | | Death: | Mar. 12, 1897 |  Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. He was one of the first to be awarded the Medal. A native of Weybread, Suffolk, he was serving as a Private in the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards when he performed the performed the deed for which he was awarded the VC. His citation reads "On 2nd September 1855 during the siege of Sebastopol, in the Crimea, a burning shell fell into a trench containing two cases of ammunition. Private Ablett, realising the danger to which all in the trench were exposed, seized the shell in his hands and threw it over the parapet, where it immediately exploded on touching the ground, but not one man suffered any injuries." He was later promoted to Sergeant, served as instructor to the Harleston Company of a Norfolk Volunteer Battalion, and became an Inspector of Police at Millwall Docks, London, England. Most sources states that he passed away at his home in Weybread, though one does state he died in East London. His medals, including the Distinguished Conduct Medal, are on display at the Grenadier Guards RHQ, Wellington Barracks, London. (bio by: Paul F. Wilson)
