Donna Lee DeWinton passed away Saturday, June 27 in San Diego surrounded by family and friends. She was 71.

Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, she graduated from Wichita Falls High School and Abilene Christian College before relocating to California. She came to the Imperial Valley in 1966 and continued her long career in the medical field that touched so many lives. She realized a lifelong dream when she returned to school to earn her Registered Nursing Degree. She balanced full-time work, raising a family and her studies to graduate in 1979.

She worked for many years in the labor and delivery rooms at both Pioneers Memorial Hospital and El Centro Regional Medical Center helping to bring thousands of new lives into this world. She was an instructor of the Lamaze childbirth technique for many expecting parents, helping ease their anxieties. For a time she was Director of the Pioneer's Women's Clinic in El Centro but soon returned to her first passion, providing hands-on nursing care, continuing on until her retirement in 1999.

She was a avid quilter creating many beautiful keepsakes for her family and friends. She also loved all things Victorian, often using the old-fashioned themes in her quilting and placing many Victorian era pieces throughout her home. She was so fond of her Yorkies and her gardens, proudly inviting her visitors to enjoy her home grown tomatoes. No stranger to travel she visited Europe twice and often went to Baja California. To fill out a well-lived life she was experienced in off-roading and big game hunting, venturing throughout the western states. She was also a collector of poultry figurines amassing several hundred in number.

She was a loving mother and grandmother, always providing for her family and displaying unconditional love. She had also cultivated many decades-long friendships that were as loving as they were enduring. She cherished you all.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Byron in 2005.

She is survived by her son, Brian Foster of Escondido; her son, Bruce Foster and his wife, Karla of El Centro; her grandchildren, Jodi, Steven, Megan, Brian and Vivian; and great-grandchildren, Christianna and Hayden. She is also survived by her older brother, Jack, who resides in Texas.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at Valley Christian Church, located at 431 W. Wall Road in Imperial, CA.

Words fail to express our sorrow. Our lives will be emptier without her. She will be sorely missed.
