In 1910, he married Helen Jane McNaughton, with whom he had one son. During the First World War, he was wounded twice and was made an Officer of the British Empire. In 1940, he was made a Commander of the British Empire, and became the Director of Military Training at the War Office. In 1943, he became a Commander of the Bath, was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, and was appointed to the Command of the 4th. Division of the British North African Forces. Just before his death, he was knighted. The quotation on his gravestone is from Psalm 39, Verse 7: "And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee." (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
