British Politician, Army Officer. He was born in Ilkely, about twelve miles North-West of Leeds in Yorkshire, and was educated at Shrewsbury and at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. He joined the Royal Artillery in 1916 but, ten years later, transferred to the Life Guards, and retired from the Army in 1928. In 1925, he had married Amy Beatrice Tetley, with whom he had three sons. In 1937, he was elected to the House of Commons as the Member for Buckingham, which, twenty-seven years later, was to become Robert Maxwell's constituency. On the outbreak of the Second World War, he re-joined the Royal Artillery and, in 1940, became an Officer of the British Empire, in addition to the Territorial Decoration. He died on take-off from Gibraltar on return to England, in the same crash of the Liberator bomber which took the life of his fellow Member of Parliament, Colonel Victor Cazalet, and of General Sikorski, the Prime Minister of Poland.
