Alice Marian Whittier Hatch
Birth: Apr. 8, 1892
Haverhill

Massachusetts, USA
Death: May 30, 1970
Amesbury

Marian(Alice)was the daughter of John W. and Mary E.(Nason)Whittier. Alice was born in Haverhill,Massachusetts. When Alice was a toddler her family moved to Brockton, Massachusetts. While living in Brockton Alice began to learn exactly how cruel life can be. In 1897 her brother John died in an accident of some sort at the age of three. Five years later her father died of pneumonia when Alice was only eight. After his passing Alice and her sister Elizabeth were sent to live with their grandmother at 74 Main Street in Newton,New Hampshire. Three months after Alice's father died her sister was crushed to death at the age of four when a pile of logs rolled on top of her in the barn, killing her instantly. When Alice was in her late teens she began to go by her middle name of Marian. She wasn't particularly fond of the name Alice. Marian is listed in the 1910 federal census as being a boarder at her future-inlaw's house in Amesbury,Massachusetts on 51(now 88)High Street. During that time she worked as a packer at a shoe store. Marian married Edward G. Hatch in April 1910 in Amesbury. They had one child,Edward G. Hatch,Jr. in 1911. Up until 1919 they lived in Amesbury. At which point they moved to Newton and lived with Marian's grandmother. They both lived there for the rest of their lives. Their son married Ruth E. Brewer. Marian and Edward had one grandchild,Edward E. and his wife Sheila R.(Ryan)Hatch(Haverhill). They had four great grandchildren. David E,Paul W.,Peter J.and Christopher R. Hatch. Marian and Edward lived in Newton,New Hampshire. Their son died in 1964 at the age of fifty-three of massive coronary. In Marian's lifetime she had lost her father and siblings by the time she was eight. To loose her only child must have been heart breaking to say the least. Despite all of these losses she endured becuase of a strong and determined inner strength. She was very active in the community. Marian prepared the school lunches every day and would bring them to the school. Marian was the Librian at The Newton Public Libray from 1936 to 1970. The building that the library was in is now the Newton historical society and is named A. Marian Hatch. In the 1960s my great grandmother worked as a cook at the Kenonza Manor Convalescent Home in Haverhill while she was in her seventies. Often she would drive home late night after work by herself to Newton. She did well for her age until she diabetes began to wreak havoc on her life. My great grandmother suffered from diabetes. Often she was noncomplient by eating foods with sugar and that were high in starch and fat. Marian passed away during surgery at Amesbury Hospital in which her leg was being amputated, because of the diabetes. She was seventy-eight at the tme of her death and is buried along side of her husband.

Remembering you on the 44th anniversary of your passing! As young as I was (about 6) I remember that day very well.
