After graduating from Tsarskoselskiy College, he volunteered for the Navy and participated in the world cruise on the ship "Kamchtka", 1817 to 1819. From 1820 to 1824, he took part in Ferdinand Wrangel's Arctic expedition to the East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea. Following this survey he explored on his own the area east of the Kolma River and collected valuable data. He joined Fyodor Wrangel in his world cruise on the ship "Krotky", 1825 to 1827 and took part in the Russo-Turkish War, 1828 to 1829, commanding military vessels. In 1835, he served in the Black Sea Fleet and in the Baltic Fleet, 1850 to 1851. In 1852, Matyushkin was promoted Admiral in the Department of the Navy, appointed Chairman of the Naval Scientific Committee in 1858 and became a Russian Senator in 1861.
