DR. RALPH W. CLARKE:
Dr. Ralph William Clarke, 86, 2101 Christian Lane, Apt. 403, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at NHC Healthcare following a lengthy illness.
Dr. Clarke was a Russell, Ky., native and had lived in Johnson City for the past 52 years. He was a son of the late Edward Monroe and Bessie Fannin Clarke.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater.
Dr. Clarke retired from East Tennessee State University's College of Education in 1978, following 32 years of service as a professor.
He received a bachelor of arts degree from Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. He received his master's degree from the University of Kentucky, Lexington, and his doctorate from the University of Florida Gainesville.
Dr Clarke was a member and past president of the Metropolitan Kiwanis Club. He was former lieutenant governor of Kiwanis International with the Kentucky and Tennessee District.
Dr Clarke was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and a member and former teacher of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the official board of the church.
Dr. Clarke was a member of Gideons International and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Cornelia J. Clarke; two sons, Richard G. Clarke, Marietta, Ga., and Ralph A. Clarke, Jonesboro; two brothers, Jessie Clarke and Charles Clarke, both of Ashland, Ky., two sisters Mrs. Elzena Carter, Ashland, and Mrs. Thelma Hayes, Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
