James Richard Matson, 82, of Butler passed away at 3:02 a.m. Thursday at his home.

He was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Butler to the late Darrell R. Matson and Helen C. (Vinroe) Matson.
Mr. Matson was a graduate of Butler High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.
He worked in the strip shear department at Armco Steel for 40 years, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Matson was a member of the American Legion Post 117 and a former member of the East Butler Fire Hall. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and dancing. He also enjoyed his bottle collection, attending flea markets and doing crossword puzzles.
Mr. Matson is survived by his wife, Marsha E. (Stepp) Raabe Matson, who he married March 3, 1972; three sons, Scott D. Matson of Butler, Gerald L. Raabe and his wife, Michelle, of Butler and Kenneth C. Raabe and his wife, Amy, of Butler; five grandchildren, Shayla Benninger, Eric Raabe, Nathan Raabe, Colten Raabe and Hallie Raabe; one brother, Raymond Matson and his wife, Mary, of Butler; one brother-in-law, Mark Mincer of Butler; one sister, Wanda Beck and her husband, George, of Butler; one sister-in-law, Sonnie Matson of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Mincer and Alice Stewart; one brother, Kenneth Matson; and one son, Marl E. Raabe.
MATSON — Friends of James Richard Matson, who died Thursday, June 13, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Tom Beck, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Burial will take place in the Greenlawn Burial Estates.
