When he immigrated to America with his father and siblings, he took the name Kvalevog as his surname and Larsen became an alternate middle name. He married his wife Tala after she immigrated in 1899 later that same year. During his lifetime he was known as Ole, and as John. He worked as a laborer in the last few years of his life, before he was hospitalized on April 12, 1954. He passed away from kidney failure. He was buried in Bisbee Cemetery in Towner County, ND on May 22, 1954.
He was the father of 11 total children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. He was the grandfather of 44.
