10th Earl of Oxford, Knight, Constable of Wallingford and Hadleigh castles, Steward of the Honour of Wallingford and St Valery, Privy Councillor, Chamberlain of the Royal Household.

Third and only surviving son and heir to Sir John de Vere and Maud de Badlesmere. Grandson of Sir Alphonse de Vere and Joan Foliot, Bartholomew Badlesmere and Margaret de Clare. He was a legatee in his older brother's Thomas's will in 1371, and heir to his nephew, Robert de Vere, the 9th Earl of Oxford who died in 1392.

Husband of Alice FitzWalter, daughter of John FitzWalter and Eleanor de Percy, daughter of Sir Henry. They had two sons and one daughter; Sir Richard 11th Earl of Oxford, John and Alice, the wife of Sir Francis Court and Sir Lewis John.

In 1360, his mother granted him the bailiwick of the forestship of the King's Forests at Havering, Essex for life. He accompanied Edward, Prince of Wales to Aquitaine in July of 1366, was sent by the Princess of Wales to London to mediate for the John, the Duke of Lancaster, who he served in January 1378 through to March. In 1383, he was appointed chief commissioner for negotiations with France, and served with Robert II, the King of Scotland in 1385.

Sir Robert de Vere lost the de Vere lands and titles when he was exiled in 1387, but restored to Aubrey and his male heirs after Robert's death in 1392. Attempts to recover the position of Chamberlain were in vain.
