Delbert Lester Casteel enlisted in the Marine Corps 15 April 1942, from Dubuque, Iowa. 22 April, 1942 assigned as an inactive reserve in the Platoon Leaders Unit, 9th Reserve Unit, NTS Great Lakes, Il.
During May, 1942 called to active duty and assigned to E Company, Candidates Class, MCB Quantico, VA. Commissioned as a Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant during August, 1943 and assigned to the 11th Reserve Officers Class (ROC) MCB Quantico, VA.
31 October, 1943 assigned to to the Amphibian Tractor Detachment, Dunedin, Floria. During March, 1943 assigned to the Tank Battalion at the Training Center, MCB Camp Elliott, CA.
During May, 1943 promoted to 1st Lieutenant. During June, 1943 assigned to 2nd Amphibious Tractor Company, Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Training Command, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA.
20 August, 1943 assigned to C Company, 1st Armored Amphibian Battalion, FMF, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA. 12 December, 1944 assigned to A Company, 11th Amphibian Tractor Battalion, FMF, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA.
6 January, 1944 embarked USS LST-38 at San Diego for movement overseas. 17-19 January, 1944 at Nawili-Wili, Kauai. 31 January, 1944 landed in Kwajalein Lagoon, Marshall Islands on D-Day and participated in combat operations landing artillery of 14th Marines on Mellu Island (IVAN) and Ennuebing Island (JACOB). 1 February, 1944 landed in Kwajalein Lagoon on D-Day Plus One and participated in combat opearations landing infantry of 24th Marines on Namur Island.
3-14 February, 1944 participated in garrison duty on Ennubirr Island (Allen). 15 February, 1944 embarked Naval Transport. 2 March, 1944 arrived at Pearl Harbor based in Camp Catlin.
17 April, 1944 embarked USS Villalobos (IX-145) at Pearl Harbor. 27-30 April, 1944 at Espirtu Santo, New Hebrides. 2 May, 1944 arrived at Guadalcanal based at Tassaforanga Point.
1 June, 1944 embarked USS LST-449 at Guadalcanal. 6-10 June, 1944 at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshalls. 1-14 July, 1944 at Eniwetok Atoll, Marshalls. Killed in Action during D-Day operations at Agat Beachhead Guam 21 July, 1944.
Next of Kin: Wife, Mrs Elaine T Casteel, 705 Rose Street, Dubuque, Iowa. Parents, Mr Clyde M (1883-1974) and Mrs Hannah V (1883-1959) Casteel.
Initially buried in USAF Cemetery Guam # 1, Asan, Guam.
1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Dubuque, Iowa.
