John L. Needham, 45, of Landenberg, Pa., who enjoyed using his many skills to help others, was struck and killed by a bolt of lightning on Thursday while playing golf in Avondale, Pa.
He was playing at the Inniscrone Golf Club in the 13th annual charity tournament benefiting the Tick Tock Early Learning Center in Avondale.
Mr. Needham was a member of a family prominent in the Chester County mushroom industry. Needham General Services Unlimited, a general contracting firm he owned, was a vital piece of the family enterprises, said his brother, William.
The 1978 graduate of Avon Grove High School excelled in athletics and theater. He was also a veteran of the Air Force and a member of the Air National Guard.
Mr. Needham was a former trustee of the Avondale Presbyterian Church, a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, past president of the Avon Grove Lions Club, and a coach for the Newark National Little League for 7 years.
Asked about Mr. Needham's many activities, his brother said: "That's what Needhams do; we hate to be bored."
He was the loving father of two daughters, Lauren and Lindsey; 2 sons, Bradley and Wesley and the loving companion of Kelly Rudinoff and her daughter Taylor. Also survived by one brother, William S. Needham and his wife Susan; one sister, Jane Needham Morrissiey and her husband George; a grandmother Marguerite E. Scott. Many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral servic will be held 11 a. m. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at the Avondale Presbyterian Church, 416 Pennsylvania Ave., Avondale, Pa. 19311. Friends and family may call from 5-9 p. m. Monday June 13, 2005 at the Foulk & Grieco Funeral Home, Inc. (610-869-2685), 200 Rose Hill Rd., West Grove, and from 9-11 a. m. the day of the service at the church. Interment will be in Union Hill Cemetery in Kennett Square. Contributions may be made to K9 partners for life, c/o AvonGrove Lions Club, 600 Baker Station Rd., West Grove, Pa. 19390
