Born in the village of Bteghrine Lebanon, Hawi spent his early years engaged in student politics and in 1955 became a member of the Lebanese Communist Party. He was imprisoned several times for supporting strikes against the Lebanese Government. In 1979 he was elected General Secretary of the Lebanese Communist Pary and held that position until 1993. Hawi became a critic of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon late in his life, after having left the LCP in 2000. In 2004, he supported the foundation of the leftist Democratic Left Movement (DLM), which opposed the Syrian occupation of Lebanon and participated in the independence uprising of 2005. He was assassinated when a bomb planted in his car was detonated by remote control, as he travelled through Beirut. (bio by: Erik Lander)
