| Birth: | Oct. 11, 1913 | | Death: | Jun. 18, 2005 |  U.S. Congressman from Texas. As a Democrat he was elected in 1963, to the House seat once held by Lyndon B. Johnson and represented Texas in Congress for more than 30 years. He rose through the ranks to become a senior Democrat on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. As chairman of the Social Security subcommittee, he passed the major Social Security reform legislation in 1983, raising the age for full benefits from 65 to 67. In 1994, he retired from office after choosing not to seek reelection. He was a Naval officer during WW II, serving in the Pacific and after the war with other veterans, started a radio station, still known as KVET in Austin, Texas. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
