Bernice Marie Oakes, 80, of 251 Figsboro Road, Martinsville, died Saturday, April 13, 2013, at her home.
She was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Pittsylvania County to Tasville Carr Oakes and Lula Kate Yeatts Oakes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Oakes; a daughter, Wanda Oakes Slaughter; a son, Jerome Oakes; and by 11 brothers and sisters.
Oakes was a member of Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren and was a graduate of Glade Hill High School. She retired from Tultex after 35 years of services as a seamstress.
Surviving are a daughter, Annette Oakes Gardner of the home; a son, Timothy Oakes of Snow Creek; a brother, William Carlton Oakes; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Mike Gallimore officiating. Burial will be in the Oakes family cemetery.
Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville is in charge of arrangements.
