Col. Robert Gates Dead
R.M. Gates, of Washington, His Son, With him in Memphis When End Came.
News was received in the city last week of the death at Jackson, Tenn., of Col. Robert Gates, father of Robert M. Gates, for several years Washington Correspondent of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Mr. Gates, the only son, was at his father's bedside when the end came, having been summoned home a week ago. Col. Gates was 74 years of age. He entered the Confederate Army when a mere youth, and rose to be a colonel on the staff of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
Col Gates practiced law after the war, but later was associated with former Congressman B.A. Enloe, in the publication of the Jackson Whig, one of the leading Democratic Newspapers of Tennessee. He organized the Memphis Commercial Club and during the past several years had been connected with the legal department of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
