He was the commanding oficer (Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel) of the 85th Illinois Vounteer Infantry during most of the Civil War. He served conspicuously during Sherman's campaign for Atlanta and was brevetted a Brigadier General for his gallant and meritorious service there. He was wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro on August 31 - September 1, 1864. He resumed his occupation of lawyer after the war and was Attorney General of the state of Nebraska from 1879 until 1882.
