Congressman and farmer. Came to Sabine County, Texas in 1839 and received his conditional land grant in December of that year. On November 13, 1840 he took his seat in the House of the Fifth Congress of the Republic of Texas from Sabine County. He later moved to Rusk County, where he was elected County Commissioner in 1848 and Justice of the Peace in 1850. Two years earlier, his daughter Frances Young Barnett married Constantine Buckley Kilgore. Barnett was co-founder of Danville, Texas, which was named for his former home in Danville, Kentucky. He was founder of Danville Masonic Lodge No. 101 and Gums Springs Presbyterian Church.
