Jesse Shivers, son of Jonas and Sarah [née Goodwin] Shivers, was born around 1759 at his parents farm in Isle of Wight, Virginia.

During the American Revolutionary War, Jesse Shiver enlisted on May 1st 1778 as a musician with the rank of Private in Capt. Francis Chiles' Company, 10th North Carolina Regiment, commanded by Col. Hogan. He muster out in the fall of 1779.

In December 1811, Jesse Shivers, Sr. received a Land Grant in Pitt County, North Carolina of 98 areas on the Tar River for his service in the war. Eight years later, on June 10th 1819, he applied for and started receiving the 16th of June; a pension of $8 per month ($96/year). He was dropped from the pension roll in Act of May 1820. (Pension Serial # 420101)

Jesse Shivers, Sr. departed this life on the 18th of September 1819 and was buried in the family cemetery.
