Seattle Mayor. He was elected as the third Mayor of Seattle, Washington, in 1872, serving only seven months in office. In 1873 he was involved in a major political scandal, accused of embezzling $15,000 ($550,000 in present day dollars) from a real estate development firm of which he was a principal investor. He fled down the Pacific Coast arriving in San Francisco in the company of a married woman. Without an acting mayor, Stone's predecessor John T. Jordan was appointed to serve as acting mayor pending a special general election which was subsequently won by Moses R. Maddocks. Prior to being elected as Seattle Mayor Stone also served three one year terms on the town council from 1869 to 1872 and was instrumental in the creation of Seattle's first Chamber of Commerce. He was also active in the development of residential property, plotting the current Seattle neighborhoods of Wallingford and Fremont and was active in the social community. In 1872 he was appointed as the director of the Library Association and served as a trustee of the Plymouth Congregational Society. Two major street arterials, Stone Way and Corliss Avenue located in Seattle's Wallingford community still remain today in the former mayor's honor. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
