Indiana Governor. He was a succesful lawyer and during World War II, he served in Europe as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Infantry. After the war, he was the national commander of the American Legion, (1949-50). In 1952, he was as a Republican the 39th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1957. While in office, he created the state's Department of Correction and reorganized the State Department of Health to provide better mental health care. After his term, he opened a law office in Virginia and later became president of an automotive company. He moved to California, in 1965, practiced law, returned the Indiana, in 1967, continued practicing law and until retiring in 1986. He was active with the Republican Party as a political adviser until his death at age 83. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
