Birth: Feb. 13, 1933
Death: Jun. 4, 2013

Alfred Reed Godfrey, 80, passed away peacefully at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on June 4, 2013. He was born in Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach) on February 13, 1933, to the late Alfred Overstreet and Mildred Bramble Godfrey.

Reed earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1950 at the age of 18, troop #62, and graduated from Oceana High School in 1951. After growing up on Broad Bay, his love of the water led him to proudly serve his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1952 until 1960. After his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, Reed returned home to work the family farm and was a master diesel mechanic, shop foreman for the Carolina Coach Company for 28 years.

Of his many interests and hobbies, some of his favorites included building and flying model planes and boats, hunting with his son and grandsons, and genealogy. Reed was a member of The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp No. 484, and he was very active in the alumni association of Oceana High School.

Reed is survived by his wife, Marie; his son, Bill (Helen); daughters, Susan Carter (Jim) and Jane Winslow (Marshall); grandchildren, Michael Pittman, Anthony Spears, James Godfrey, James and Jason Carter, Ellen and Erin Winslow; his sister, Mildred Frazier (David); three great grandchildren; and a host of extended family, nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for their kindness and excellent care during his many visits over the past few months.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior. Burial will follow at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the rescue squad of Virginia Beach. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
