Ruby Luella (Kilmer) Mundt, died Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Heritage of Bel-Air in Norfolk, Nebraska. Ruby, daughter of Colburn John and Maude E. (Stapleton) Kilmer, was born April 30, 1913, at Stapleton, Nebraska.
Ruby spent her early years near her birthplace in Logan County, Nebraska, then moved with her family as a young child to a farm between Newman Grove and Madison, Nebraska. She attended Mount Hope High School (District 27) near the family home, and graduated with her high school diploma after only two years. After receiving her education, Ruby worked around home for a while, then moved to Wood Lake, Nebraska, to live with her sister and her family, who were working on a WPA project at the time. It was while living in Wood Lake and working in a restaurant that Ruby met her husband to be, Wayne Mundt. Ruby and Wayne were married in 1936, and they returned to her home county of Madison to farm near Meadow Grove. The couple was blessed with two children, Marlin and Leland.
After farming for a couple of years near Meadow Grove, Ruby and Wayne moved to Tilden, Nebraska, where they purchased a restaurant from the O'Banion famiy. The Mundt's ran the restaurant for several years, before selling it. At that time, Ruby went to work with Leola Botsford at a restaurant. Later, Ruby was employed during the day by Hash's Clothing Store, and then worked another full day's work well into the night at a restaurant. It was hard work, and the days were quite long with two full-time jobs, but after becoming a single mom with two children to raise, Ruby dedicated herself to providing for her boys. When Marlin and Leland were grown up and began lives of their own, Ruby continued to work in the restaurant business well into her 80's, but she also took time to devote some time to becoming active in numerous card and coffee clubs. She also took much enjoyment in crocheting, making literally thousands of doilies, and sewed most of her own clothes, as well as sewing countless dresses for other ladies in the community. It was also in her post-child rearing days that she experienced a major highlight in her life—buying her first car. Though she considered herself "semi-retired" around age 70, Ruby then began a second career of sorts, actively providing in-home care for many local residents suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia. Ruby was an amazing lady, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who gave all she had to providing and caring for those around her. In Ruby's lifetime, she was a witness to the most changing century our nation experienced in its history, and had just recently celebrated her 100th birthday on April 30, 2013, surrounded by her family and friends.
Ruby is survived by: sons, Marlin Mundt of Norfolk, Nebraska and Leland Mundt of Fort Myers, Florida; as well as grandsons and their families, Mike (wife Rachell) Mundt (children, Jack, Sam, and Grace), Brad (wife Kelly) Mundt (children, Nathan and Anna), and Matt (wife Brigetta) Mundt, and several nieces and nephews.
Ruby was preceded in death by parents, Colburn and Maude Kilmer; two brothers and five sisters.
Burial was in the Tilden City Cemetery, Tilden, Nebraska.
