Oscar Hunter Adams, of Richmond, born September 24, 1913, in Washington, D.C., to the late Oscar and Gertie Adams, died on July 18, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Thomas Adams; and eldest son, William Hunter Adams.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Monroe Adams; son, Robert T. Adams and his wife, Claudia M . Adams; grandchildren, Lt. Col. William J. Adams, Franklin L. Adams, Lydia A. Hart, Laura A. Woerner, Ruth S. Adams, Elizabeth A. Wagoner and 1st Lt. Charles M . Gill; and great-grandchildren, Analise Adams, Amanda Adams, Patrick Adams and Mason Wagoner.
Mr. Adams graduated from VMI in 1936 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and from the UNC Chapel Hill with a Master's Degree in Sanitary Engineering. He was a career Army Officer in the Medical Service Corps and achieved the rank of Colonel. His responsibilities included planning, development and construction of Army hospitals all over the world. He received significant praise for his work in rebuilding Walter Read Medical Center and the medical center at the Prisidio in San Francisco. Colonel Adams retired from the military in 1968 and was employed with the Virginia State Health Department Regional Office in Lexington. In 1971, he moved to Richmond where he became Director of Engineering Services for the State Health Department. Some of the departments he was responsible for were the public water supplies, sewer disposal, shellfish sanitation and toxic substances. Mr. Adams retired from the State Health Department in the early 1980s.
The family will receive friends at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., on Monday from 5 to 7 p. m ., and where funeral services will be held 11 a. m . Tuesday. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VMI Foundation, Niekirk Hall, Attn: Warren Bryan, Lexington, Va. 24450.
