Medical Pioneer. A native of Tokyo, he became a professor of medicine at the Seijukan school, which specialized in Chinese medical theory and practice under the auspices of the shogun. In this capacity he carried out Confucian philosophical research and compiled a collection of voluminous texts, the "Keiseki hoko-shi," which is still used today. He also revised the "Ishimpo," a medical treatise from the Heian period of Japan. Renowned author Ogai Mori wrote a biography of him in 1916.
