World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Sligo, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Leinster Regiment, British Army. On October 14, 1918, near Ledeghem, Belgium, Private Moffat was advancing with five comrades across an open field when they suddenly came under heavy fire from a strongly held house. Rushing toward the house Private Moffat threw bombs and worked his way to the back of the house. He then rushed the door single-handed, killing two and capturing thirty of the enemy. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross presented by King George V at Buckingham Palace. He died at age 65, drowning in the freezing waters off Rosses Point in Sligo, Ireland.
