In the Civil War, he enlisted in the 43rd Regiment, Georgia Infantry Co. F and was captured in the fighting at Baker's Creek, near Vicksburg, MS. He died in the harsh conditions of Fort Delaware Prison. After initial burial in the marshes of Pea Patch Island outside the walls of the prison, his remains later were transferred to a common grave of Confederate dead at Finn's Point, NJ.
