BATTLES, FRANCES age 88, passed away Monday, May 27, 2013. She was a life long member of First Christian Church in Hartselle and in Birmingham AL. She attended the University of Montevallo and Florence State Teachers College after which she taught in the public schools in Morgan County. She married the late Olen M. Battles in 1947 and moved to Birmingham. She later operated and taught a private kindergarten in the basement of her home for many years in the late 1950's and 1960's, where she came into contact with many in a growing Gardendale. Her children were her hobby, always lending a "listening" ear to family and friends. However, she also enjoyed time spent working in the Garden Dale Garden Club, The Literary Club and the Ona Ruth Women's Circle at First Christian Church. She is survived by her daughter, Susan B. Moore (Buddy), Daughter, Martha B. Thomas (Bill) and Son, David C. Battles (Nancy). Grandsons Trey Moore, Mark Thomas (Christy), Duke Battles, and Fletcher Battles, Grand daughters Fran and great-grand daughter, Catey Thomas. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the New Gardendale Funeral Home from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. with a graveside service following at 11:15 at Oakwood Memorial Gardens. She carried with her many memories of her friends and neighbors on the "Cliffs" and time recently spent at Covenant Place. Many thanks to those neighbors, church members and caregivers who have been so supportive. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church, 4954 Valleydale Rd. Birmingham, AL 35242
