Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday in Frye Chapel & Mortuary in Brawley for Lupe "Cuata" Barra, 58, of Brawley, who died of cancer Thursday in Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brawley with the Rev. Ben Davison officiating.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.
Ms. Barra was born May 9, 1944, in Brawley. She attended local schools and graduated from Brawley Union High School and Imperial Valley College.
A lifelong Brawley resident, her family said she was active in her church. She and the Sisters of Christ met every Wednesday to pray for those in need.
Ms. Barra was a board member for Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization-Between Women.
According to family, her dedication and hard work to help women educate themselves on breast cancer and breast exams was unrelentless.
As a member of Between Women she reached out to women with breast cancer and talked with them about their experiences.
According to family, her ability to reach non-English speaking survivors was instrumental.
Ms. Barra enjoyed watching high schools sports and attended school activities in which her nieces and nephews were involved.
According to family she also enjoyed going to casinos, going for drives and shopping. Her family said she was a creative person.
Ms. Barra worked for the Brawley Police Department for 24 years, where she was instrumental in starting the COMBAT program. She also worked for the Imperial County Sheriff's Office.
Mrs. Barra gave herself unconditionally to her son and to her family and friends, according to family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pacifico and Genoveva Barra; sister, Rosa Garcia; and brother, Pacifico Barra Jr.
She is survived by her son, Leonard Barra of Brawley; sisters, Alice Barra and Rosie Rubio, both of Brawley; brothers, Manuel, John, Paul and Joe Barra, all of Brawley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
