On April 13, 1896, at Latrobe, El Dorado County, Roberts quite cold bloodily murdered Walter Freeman by cutting his throat because Freeman had tripped him after an argument at a bar. The following month Roberts was tried and convicted, with his execution by hanging occurring at Folsom State Prison a few months later. It was reported that he showed very little outward emotion at the execution.
