Served in the Civil War as First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee on December 16, 1864. His citation reads simply “Capture of flag of 4th Mississippi (C.S.A.)”. His Medal was issued on February 24, 1865.
