Helen Sheppard Salter, 79, died Aug. 16 at Candler Hospital.
She was born in Screven County and lived in Savannah the past 51 years. She was the widow of William D. Salter.
She was founder and owner of the original licensed Helen Salter's Savannah Tours, started in 1966 and in operation for 27 years. Among prominent visitors to the city who used her service were Jacquelyn Kennedy Onassis, Alex Haley, Henry Cabot Lodge and actress Donna Douglas of "Beverly Hillbillies" fame.
She was active in many civil and political organizations throughout her life and was a lifetime member of the Republican National Committee. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple and had formerly been a member of Ardsley Park Baptist Church, where she was active in the Adult School Program.
SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy S. and Don H. Dimick of Savannah; four brothers, Harry and Donnie Sheppard of Sylvania and Bruce and Thomas Sheppard of Savannah; three grandchildren, Deborah Sullivan, Dee Dee Merritt and Donnie Dimick, all of Savannah; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.
FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Thursday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
