Priscilla Wimberley Cowart was born on February 18, 1821, in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Zachariah W. Wimberley and his first wife Quinna Vaughn Wimberley.

Priscilla grew up to marry James Jay Cowart, a physician and minister for the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He held this position in Monroe County, Arkansas, and in Lee County, Texas. The couple had at least six children--

1. Nancy Clementine Cowart (Mrs. William "Bill" George Justice),
2. Bethena "Bethany" Eglantine Cowart (Mrs. James "Doc" Lafayette Mills),
3. Louisa Josephine Cowart(died as an infant),
4. Quinnie Ann Cowart (Mrs. James D. Oates),
5. Pleasant Early Capers "Cape Perry" Cowart (married Ida Demic), and
6. James Jay Warren Cowart (married Mary "Mollie" Manemma Beall).

Priscilla moved from Wake County, North Carolina, to Monroe County, Arkansas, to Lee County, Texas. It is possible that Priscilla left North Carolina at the same time as her brothers and sisters in 1837-1838 when their mother died. Priscilla died in March 1858 and was buried near the church where her husband then served as a minister. (Early Chapel Cemetery, Lexington, Lee County, Texas)

Priscilla's husband James Jay Cowart was working as a physician in 1870 Grandview, Johnson County, Texas. He had married Elizabeth Jane Inman shortly after Priscilla's death. He had at least two more children with Elizabeth--Mary Virginia Cowart Ingle and Jessie Turner Cowart. In the 1900 Briscoe County, Texas, Census, James Jay Warren is 81 years old and living in the household of his son James Jay Warren Cowart. He was perhaps buried in Texas, but some family researchers report that he moved to live with a sister and was buried in Alabama.
