Born in México City, México, at age 18 he won several singing competitions singing tangos under the name Javier Luquín. He studied singing under Noé Quintero, and in mid 1955 he met Julio Rodríguez of the trio “Los Panchos,” who recommended him for an audition at Columbia records where he changed his name to Javier Solis. His audition was approved and he recorded his first single with "Por qué negar" and "Qué te importa," which earned him his first platinum record on September 5, 1957. Solis was the first to sing songs in a style now known as "Boleros-Rancheras" and his recording of "Llorarás, llorarás" in 1958 launched him internationally. On June 18, 1959 he launched his first international tour to the United States, Central and South America, performing in places like the Million Dolar, Puerto Rico, and Lyceum theaters. In February 1960 he made his first movie, “El Norteño,” in all there would be 33 movies. He recorded more than 320 songs, an album per month. On February 8, 1965 he recorded the hit “Sombras” which broke all previous sales records at the record company which presented him with a medal for his achievements as a singer and for his high sales. On April 12, 1966 he was admitted to the Clínica Santelena in México City, because of problems with his gall bladder, he underwent surgery the next day but died of complications on April 19, 1966 at the age of 34. Just prior to his death he said, "Let them water my grave with lots of water, I know that I am going to die, this has no remedy.” (bio by: Debbie)
