Andrew J. "Jack" Trail 85 of Charleston, WV passed away on February 12, 2011 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born on October 30, 1925 in Laeger, WV He was the son of the late Andrew J. Trail, Sr and Mary Perdue Trail. He was preceded in death by his four brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Josephine M. Trail; daughter Jackie Kinder and husband Ron of Pinch, WV; grandsons Randy Kinder of Pinch and Andrew Kinder of Charleston.
He enlisted in 1940 at the age of 15 in the Army. On June 8, 1944 he stormed the beaches of Normandy. After being wounded in combat he was discharged from the Army in 1944.
After he left the Army, he ran several small businesses until 1960 when he went to work for the State of WV Department of Employment Security. In 1971, he went to work for the US Department of Labor where he was nominated for the position by Senators Robert C. Byrd and Jennings Randolph and appointed by President Richard M. Nixon and worked there until he retired in 1980. In 1989 he went to work for the WV State Senate. On January 10, 1996 he was appointed the 50th Head Door Keeper of the Senate and held that position until 2008.
He is a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was the moderator of the church and served as Head Deacon. He belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge of WV, which he was Past Grandmaster. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He also belongs to Veterans of Foreign Wars, and member of the 10th Infantry.
Jack was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday February 16, 2011 11am at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Newland officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Bluefield, WV. Graveside service will be at 2:30pm. Visitation will be held Tuesday 6-8pm and one hour prior to the service at the church.
