Admiral, Confederate States Navy. First Captain of the Iron Clad Merrimack (CSS Virginia) March 3,1862 when it sunk the USS Congress. Appointed Admiral 21 Aug 1862. Later he was defeated by Admiral Farragut at Mobile Bay. Post war, he was president of Maryland State Agricultural College.
