Doris was born in Gann Valley, South Dakota on the family's homestead; the youngest of five. The family moved to California in about 1926 to Long Beach due to her mother's health. Her dad worked in the oil fields and later was foreman on the discovery well in the Kettleman Hills Oil Field. All her siblings married and remained indescribably close. Their mother died in 1931 when Doris was 15.
She married 'Pat' M. R. Davis in 1934 and had two children. She worked as a dressmaker, in a drug store and a grocery, a cotton company and in all the family's businesses. She and Pat divorced after 1954. In 1974 she married Chuck Clarida; they also divorced.
When a Dunham sibling moved because of a new job opportunity, the others soon followed.... cousins joined in too.. They were family oriented enjoying fishing, picnics, evening meals and card games, square dancing, and business endeavors together. The Dunham five gathered last as a group was to Lake Co, CA. Doris married a third time to John Williams Dudley on Jan. 6, 1974 in Nice, CA.
Doris and her sister Dorothy operated The Evergreen Guest Home in Lakeport, and in the 1980's her sisters, Rae and Dorothy operated a guest home for elderly women in Nice. Both had long waiting lists for residency.
Their only brother, who they adored, Roy Dunham owned a hobby & bicycle and hobby shop in Lakeport; which her son Jimmie, after completing a. 20 year Navy career, purchased and operated as Lake Cyclery. A few years later he sold it back to his Uncle to take a job in the Nuclear Power industry on the east coast.
Doris' last home was in Nice, CA with her dear husband John. They enjoyed traveling. In 1983 they visited his son, a University professor in Malui, Africa. On their way home they made a detour stop to see her newborn and youngest granddaughter in Louisiana before they returned to California. She knitted, macramed, did string art, and a various variety of craft items to give as gifts. Elephant figurines were her favorite item to collect.
She had a wonderful sense of humor; living life to the fullest, a real gem. In 1985, God took her home after her valiant quiet battle of emphysema and lung cancer...to worship and enjoy Him!
