Edmund received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Emory & Henry College in Abingdon, Virginia, where his father was on the faculty. He received M.D. degrees from both the University of Nashville (1885) and Vanderbilt University (1886), Nashville, TN.
Edmund was named for Edmund Longley (1819-1906), professor of mathematics and modern languages at Emory & Henry College, where both he and Rev. J.M. Sharpe, professor of Latin, were faculty members.
After completing medical school, Edmund moved to Texas, where he married 1) Elizabeth "Betty" Rainey (1863-about 1887). No children of this marriage. Elizabeth was the daughter of Elizabeth Medlin Rainey, Memorial# 91199059.
Edmund married 2) Naomi Matthews (1871-1948) about 1892 in Wilson County, TX. In 1892, he & Naomi moved to Pleasanton, Atascosa County, TX.
Four children:
• Baby Mora (1893-1893; a son)
• Richard Douglas Sharpe (1895-1938)
• Edna Sharpe Atkinson (1896-1971)
• Mora Hammond Sharpe (1899-1923; Memorial# 76175199)
