In 1663 there was a James Elbert in Maryland. He is on the rent rolls of Talbot County, Maryland, he is found in Lord Calvert papers (rent rolls). The immigrants did not own their land when they came to America, they rented from Lord Calvert. He was on Dividing Creek near Edmondson Cove, a plantation. He will also be found in the records as "James Elberd" which shows that sometimes the "t" was not used. In 1689 we find Hugh Elbert for the first time.

Mary is Hugh Elbert's first wife, proven in the papers of 1687, for Dogwood Ridge. This is proof that she was the first wife of Hugh, and also she did not died until after 1693, because the proof is in the paper's when Hugh and Mary sold Dogwood Ridge, in 1693. Mary died after August of 1693.

We know Mary was the Mother of his four children, his children were William, Mary, Sarah, and Rebecca. Mary died and Hugh married Eilinor Pierce March 1700, she was the widow of Bryan. They had no children.

Edward Bryan was the son of Eilinor Elbert and he brought suit against William Elbert for his share of the estate of Hugh Elbert, and Ellinor Bryan.

The suit mentioned the three daughters of Hugh by a different wife, which also proves that Ellinor was not the mother of William and his sisters, and in the Dogwood Ridge papers, wife of Hugh Elbert was Mary.
