| Birth: | Jan. 5, 1813 | | Death: | Jul. 28, 1903 |  Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, CSA Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1835, moved to Gonzales County, Texas, where he practiced law and established a plantation. He was elected to the First Provisional Congress of the Confederacy in 1861, recruited the Waul's Texas Legion and was commissioned its Colonel in 1862. In 1863, he surrendered his command after the Battle Vicksburg and was promoted Brigadier General, in September 1863. From 1864, until the end of the war, he commanded a brigade at the Red River Campaign, Pleasant Hill and at the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas. After the war, he was elected to the first Texas reconstruction convention and resumed legal practice in Galveston until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
