Death: Jun. 15, 1864
Mannington
Marion County

James was the son of Abraham "Lame Abe" Ice and Mary "Polly" Lewman. He married Lavina Lee Snodgrass, a daughter of William and Mary Snodgrass, on February 28, 1849. They had six children.

James was a farmer living in Mannington during the Civil War. On June 15, 1864 Union forces came to his farm to conscript horses for the cause. James, knowing that he would never be able to perform his work or replace his horses, declined to give them to the troops. For his effort of protecting his property, he was shot and killed by the soldiers. His wife, Lavina, lived only four years after the death of her husband.
