Alice B. Howell was born on December 7, 1923 and passed away on May 20, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Otis. Interment will follow in the Otis Cemetery. Memorials are preferred. Baucke Funeral Home of Yuma, is in charge of arrangements.
Alice B. (Rutz) Howell, age 89, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, May 20, 2013, with her son, Byron, by her side. All three of her children, Cindy, Byron, and Jerry were by her side for many days prior to the Lord calling her home. Alice was born December 7, 1923, in Paonia, Colorado. At the age of four months she became the adopted and beloved daughter of Emil W. and Edith Nellie (Sullivan) Rutz; and, the sister of adopted brother, Robert Rutz. She was baptized on May 11, 1924 at the Otis St. Paul Lutheran Church and was confirmed on February 17, 1974. Her early childhood and early school years were spent on a farm in the Wray-Laird area and Otis. During her teenage years her family moved to a farm north of Otis. Alice attended the Otis Schools where she participated in and developed a love for sports, especially basketball and baseball. She was particularly proud of the letters she earned for playing on the women's basketball team.
In 1942, Alice was married to Harold Bingham. Shortly thereafter, Harold was drafted into World War II as a paratrooper. While he was away at war, one son, Gary L. Bingham, was born to this marriage in 1943. As a young mother and during the time her husband was in the war, Alice and her newborn son lived with her parents, Emil and Edith, on the family farm in Wray and then on the family farm five miles north of Otis. Alice's father had been in poor health for many years. Due to WW II there was a shortage of nurses, so Alice helped her mother take care of her father and worked long hours on the farm driving a tractor and milking cows; while at the same time continuing to be a mother to her young son. Alice received word in 1945 that her husband had been killed in the war and buried in the Philippine Islands. Shortly thereafter in June of 1946, Alice's father passed away. She loved her father immensely and proudly recalls that with the help of her father's friends, and at the young age of 22, she was able to bring in the wheat harvest for the family that year.
Alice and Wayne Howell, were united in marriage on February 15, 1954 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. To this loving union were born three children: Jerry, Byron, and Cindy. They made their home in Otis, raising their children in a house located behind the Otis First Presbyterian Church. Jerry, Byron and Cindy, along with their families, could always come back home to the same house for over 50 years. Alice loved the beauty of the plains and never wanted to stray far from home.
Alice was a loving mother, passionately devoted to and protective of her children. No matter what time of day or night it was, she was always there to provide unconditional love, support, encouragement and wisdom. She emphasized the importance of church, education, respecting others, treating everyone fairly and honestly, and staying close to family. Maintaining a love of sports throughout her lifetime, she was her children's most ardent sports fan, never missing a single event through all their years of high school and summer baseball and softball! An extremely hard worker without complaint all her life, she made sure that her family had home-cooked meals, a clean home, and for many years was employed as a waitress at the Otis Cafe and a number of other cafes in town. She sacrificed opportunities in her own life so that her family would have the best life possible through opportunities she never had. She served as the "glue" that held her family together in strong, loving arms. Her legacy is her family.
Alice was hard working, but also fun-loving and outgoing. In addition to attending her children's sports and school events, she loved to go out dancing. She also enjoyed singing, playing the piano, holidays, solving cross-word puzzles, playing cards and socializing with best friends.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Edith Rutz; her brother, Robert Rutz; her first husband, Harold Bingham; her second husband, Wayne Howell, and her granddaughter, Michelle (Bingham) Anderson. In her final days, she longed to return "home" to be with her Lord and to see her Mom and Dad again.
Alice's intense, unconditional, and sacrificial love of family along with her feisty, independent and determined life spirit will be deeply missed by her family. She is survived by her son Jerry and wife, Cynthia; her son, Byron and wife, Donnia, and grandson, Corey; her daughter Cindy Whitehead and husband, Phill, grandson, Chas Davis, and granddaughter, Brittany Davis; her son Gary Bingham and grandsons, Michael Bingham and Darren Bingham; four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
