James Stephens Terral, Jr. was the son of James Stephens Terral and his wife, Mary Aletha Heidelberg.

Thomas' paternal grandparents were:
Susana Artalissa Stephens (1768-1811)
Edward Young Terrall (1765-1833) was a Revolutionary War Patriot. At the age of 17, he served as a Private in the South Carolina Militia.

In 1858, James was elected District Attorney, beating out a very popular incumbent.

On 6 Dec 1859, James married Catherine Mary Trotter.
They had two children:
1) Ida Kate Terral, born in 1861 and died young
2) George Alexander Trotter Terral (1862-1893)

In fall of 1861, along with Major Welborne, James raised the 7th Mississippi Battalion. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel.

3 Oct 1862 James was wounded at the Battle of Corinth. He was wounded in the left breast and was still leading and encouraging his men in battle. He was then, struck to the ground with a broken thigh bone above the knee. His left leg was amputated.

4 Oct 1862 James' brother, Thomas Milton Terral was killed at the Battle of Corinth.

On 2 Nov 1862 James died of his injuries. When he knew he was dying, he sent a farewell to his family and expressed that he was content to die, in that he died for his country.
