Thomas was the son of Rev. James Stephens Terral (1811-1879) and his wife Mary Aletha Heidelberg (1812-1885).

Thomas' paternal grandparents were:
Susana Artalissa Stephens (1768-1811)
Edward Young Terrall (1765-1833) was a Revolutionary War Patriot. At the age of 17, he served as a Private in the South Carolina Militia.


Thomas was a 1st Lieutenant, Company C, 37th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers in the Confederate States Army. He enlisted 13 March 1862 in Quitman, Mississippi. Thomas was killed 4 Oct 1862 at the Battle of Corinth.

Thomas' brother, James Stephens Terral was a Lt. Colonel and also fought at the Battle of Corinth. He was wounded on 3 Cot 1862 and he died of his injuries 2 Nov 1862.

The name Terral is spelled several different ways on documents and by family members, such as Terrell, Terral, Terrall.
