Medical Pioneer. He was the founder of world's first aerial medical service. Born in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia, as a Presbyterian minister he was assigned by the church the task of touring the rural Northern Territory of Australia to discover the people's needs. His report led to the establishment of the Australian Inland Mission in 1913, which he was named the director of. Under his guidance a strategically placed network of ten medical facilities were established throughout the rural and rugged area. His vision of providing an aerial medical service complete with radio communication became a reality in 1928. Today the Royal Flying Doctor Service has thirteen flying doctor bases that serves eighty percent of the Australian continent. It remains the world's largest and most comprehensive aeromedical emergency and health care service. At his death he was cremated with his ashes being buried at the base of Mount Gillen.
